For many this procedure
should be viewed as a reconstructive procedure and is
usually covered by medical health insurance. There are
certain medical criteria that must be met for health
insurance coverage and this will be discussed with you
during your consultation. The procedure is very similar to a
standard
mastopexy except that excess breast tissue in
addition to excess skin is removed. A visible scar is
required and goes around the border of the areola and
extends down to the breast crease. The length of the crease
scar is determined by the existing breast shape and degree
of reduction required.
For information on
male
breast reduction, please see our
Gynecomastia page.

- If you have large,
heavy breasts that seem out of proportion and decrease
your sense of attractiveness.
- If you have large,
heavy breasts that may be contributing to upper back
discomfort, breast pain, shoulder notching, breast skin
rashes, or chafing.
|
- Smaller, more
proportional and attractive breasts.
- Relief of symptoms
caused by the excess breast weight.
- Improved self-image.
The operation is done
as an outpatient procedure in
our private surgical
facility under light general anesthesia or in the
hospital.
This procedure is
covered by medical health insurance in many cases and
Dr. Mosher will assist in getting prior approval for you
when indicated.
In some instances,
liposuction
alone can be used to achieve the desired
results (firm fatty breast, male breast enlargement).
This avoids most scarring but does not remove any excess
skin. Therefore, this is limited to patients with good
skin tone.
Incisions are made
around the areola (pigmented area around the nipple),
and downward to the breast crease. An incision along the
breast crease is usually needed as well. The nipple-areolar
complex is lifted to the desired new position and excess
breast tissue and skin are removed.
A light dressing is
placed, small drains are often used, and a compression
bra is applied.
Initial discomfort is
well managed with oral medications and decreases
rapidly.
- Scars will usually
fade in six to twelve months.
The final and improved
breast shape requires about three months to develop.
You can return to light activity in two weeks and
exercise in four to six weeks.
Exercise and weight
loss do influence the size of the breast and should be
optimized before surgery.
Contouring operations of the torso, such as
liposuction,
can also be considered at the same time.
