Hair Reduction Treatments |
Hair removal has gone from
razors and creams to lasers and light technology. At
our
office,
Dr. Mosher
has selected proven technology to achieve
permanent hair reduction in patients of most skin and hair
colors. While no single technology available today is
capable of optimal hair removal for all patients, all
technologies have improved and have made permanent hair
reduction safer and more affordable. The skills of the
technician performing the treatments strongly influence the
results. A more skilled technician can also greatly lower
your risk of complications from these treatments.
Patients who have lighter skin
with darker hair can expect the best results with most laser
and intense pulsed light (IPL) systems available today.
Systems available in clinics with a medical doctor’s
supervision are more effective than salon-based
systems. For ideal candidates,
our office
uses the Aurora HR™ system
which is a unique hair removal treatment that combines intense pulsed light with radiofrequency energy.
This modality compares favorably
to other systems for ideal candidates who have light skin
and dark hair. More importantly, this system can be used for
more difficult cases when there is less contrast between the
skin and hair color. The Aurora HR™ is also the only system
available today with clinically-proven success treating
light-colored hair, including red, grey and white hair. Our
trained technicians will discuss these options with you and
customize a treatment program to create optimal hair
reduction in the safest and most comfortable manner.

- Healthy patients with
hair that is a darker color than the underlying skin.
Some patients with grey, red or white hair.
- The Aurora HR™ system
may be appropriate for patients who have achieved some
improvements with other laser hair removal systems but
are looking for further results or a more comfortable
treatment.
- Patients must be
willing to have a series of treatments (usually four to
eight) every two to three months for best results.
- Patients must be
willing to avoid tanning of the treated areas and
protect the skin from sun damage.
Patients can generally
expect after an appropriate series of treatments:
- 75% permanent
reduction for those with lighter skin and darker
hair.
- 50% permanent
reduction for those with lighter hair or darker
skin.
- Nearly all hairs
in the treated area will become finer and lighter.
After an average of
five treatments, patients will experience less hair
coming back. Hair will grow more slowly and get
progressively finer and lighter in color with each
treatment. Red, white or grey hair may require more
treatments.
After your initial
assessment, the hair in the area to be treated is
closely trimmed and the skin is covered with a cool and
clear gel. The systems use different pulses of energy
with each pulse lasting less than half a second.
Treating small areas like the face, underarm, bikini
area or lower abdomen take just a few minutes. Larger
areas like the arms, back or legs can take 30 to 60
minutes. There is a mild discomfort followed by a brief
redness in the treated area. A soothing cream with
sunscreen is usually applied prior to you resuming your
normal activities.
There is very minimal
risk and discomfort associated with hair removal
treatments. These risks will be discussed with you prior
to any treatments. Many patients find the Aurora HR™
treatments to be more comfortable than other systems.
Hair that is actively growing will be totally or
partially disabled and will be shed during the weeks
after each treatment. As the natural growth cycle of
hair continues, dormant hair will become active and then
disabled during subsequent treatments.
- Shaving, plucking,
waxing, threading, and depilatory creams can only treat
the hair shaft that is visible. None of these techniques
are able to affect the ability of new hair to grow and, therefore, they do not compare well with laser and Aurora
HR™ hair removal treatments.
- Electrolysis can
achieve permanent reduction of hair growth but is
impractical for anything but a very small area.
