Other Vancouver Area Breast Surgery Procedures

Every woman is unique, and has her own vision of her ideal breast appearance. While many women can achieve their ideal through breast augmentation or breast lift surgery alone, others require different procedures to address their particular breast characteristics. Dr. Mathew Mosher specializes in these less common but equally important breast procedures, so that every woman can have the breasts she desires to make her look and feel her best.

Correction of Breast Asymmetry

It is not uncommon for a woman to have breasts that are asymmetrical, meaning that one is a different size than the other. For some women, however, the difference is so significant that they may feel self-conscious and may even have problems with the way their clothing fits. Dr. Mosher can correct breast asymmetry either by enlarging the smaller of the breasts with an implant, reducing the larger of the breasts, or by using two different sized implants during a breast augmentation procedure at his Vancouver area practice. In cases where there is significant sagging of one or both breasts, he may also perform a breast lift to elevate the breasts to a more youthful, symmetrical position.

Inverted Nipple Repair

Approximately 2% of women have inverted nipples, meaning that the nipples turn inward instead of projecting outward. This condition is usually caused by shortened milk ducts that pull the nipple inward, and it can be corrected through a relatively straightforward procedure. A small incision at the base of the nipple allows Dr. Mosher to release the shortened ducts, freeing the nipple from its inverted position. Small stitches hold the nipple out in a projected position, and traction is applied to maintain this projected position during healing. Some women choose to have inverted nipples repaired at the time of another breast surgery, such as breast augmentation.

Areolar/Nipple Reduction

Some women are self-conscious about enlarged nipples, or dilated areolas (the darker circle of skin around the nipple). Dr. Mosher can correct these conditions alone, or in conjunction with another Vancouver area breast surgery. For nipples that are too long or too thick, Dr. Mosher performs a simple procedure to either shorten the length or reduce the diameter. Both of these procedures involve removing a section of skin, and dissolving sutures are used for your comfort and convenience. Areolar reduction requires an incision around the border of the areola or around the base of the nipple, and the removal of a section of the darker skin. Dr. Mosher uses the smallest incision possible in order to minimize scarring.

Tuberous Breast Correction

Many women have a condition called tuberous or tubular breasts, in which the breast is constricted at the base and often there are large, protruding areolas. This malformation of the breast can cause embarrassment and self-consciousness, and surgical correction can make a dramatic difference for these patients. Inconspicuous incisions are made around the areola to reduce and tighten the areolar tissues. When needed, internal incisions are used to release the constricted breast tissue and make room for an implant. The implant fills out the lower breast crease and can improve the appearance of the enlarged areola and give the breast a more natural shape. In some cases, a staged procedure with each operation separated by about 3 months may be recommended for optimal results.
