Your Breast Augmentation Procedure
Breast augmentation is performed as an outpatient procedure at our surgical facility, using light general anesthesia. Dr. Mosher can make a small incision in the breast fold (inframammary) or around the areola (periareolar) through which he inserts the implant. Dr. Mosher uses careful surgical techniques and instruments that minimize tissue trauma, bruising and bleeding, which results in a much more comfortable and rapid recovery. The implant can be placed beneath the breast tissue (subglandular) or under both the breast tissue and the chest muscles (subpectoral), depending on your particular anatomy, personal preference, and Dr. Mosher's recommendation.
Options for Breast Implants at our Vancouver Area Clinic: Saline or Silicone?
At YES Medspa and Cosmetic Surgery Centre, Dr. Mosher offers both silicone and saline filled breast implants. Vancouver area patients have this choice as both are approved by Health Canada and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and each has its own advantages and disadvantages.
- Saline implants are filled with a medical grade saltwater solution which is harmlessly absorbed by the body if leakage or rupture occurs. These implants have a lower manufacturing cost, so are more affordable than silicone. Since saline implants are filled after placement, they allow for more incision options, and also can be adjusted for more refined symmetry of the breasts. Generally, when compared to silicone gel implants, patients find that saline implants do not feel quite as much like natural breast tissue. They have also been associated with a higher rate of revisional surgery attributable to factors such as a higher deflation rate and more frequent problems of implant shell ripples and wrinkles.
- Silicone gel filled implants have rapidly gained in popularity among breast augmentation patients in Vancouver, BC since becoming approved by Health Canada in 2001. These newer implants are filled with a cohesive silicone gel that does not leak or migrate in the event of rupture. Most patients find that silicone implants create results that look and feel more like natural breasts. The more cohesive or firmer silicone gel in these implants has led to the nickname of "gummy bear" implants. Round moderately cohesive silicone gel and anatomical shaped highly cohesive silicone gel implants are most frequently recommended by Dr. Mosher. Due to higher manufacturing costs, silicone gel implants come with a higher price tag than saline filled implants.
Recovery and Results
Dr. Mosher's high level of experience and surgical skill allows him to minimize stretching and trauma to surrounding tissues, which greatly reduces post-operative discomfort. Some swelling and discomfort are to be expected, and these are managed with oral medications, stretching exercises and cool compresses. You will wear a snug-fitting sports bra for approximately 2 weeks to provide support and to help with healing.
Our unique program for rapid recovery following this surgery allows many of our patients to go out for dinner in the evening following their surgery. Most women who choose breast augmentation in Vancouver return to light activity and work within a few days of their surgery, but strenuous exercise or weight lifting must be avoided for at least 4 weeks. Your breasts will look noticeably larger right away, but it will take up to 3 months for the tissues to relax and for the breasts to "settle" into a more natural shape.
